Window Terminology
Guardian:
The hook-shaped piece of hardware that mounts on the style sheet within a casement window in which the band dedicated lock.
Dismantled:
Not assembled. Parts for a pre-context of the Manu ¬ window assembly constructed for the later in a workplace.
Label:
An outgoing molding around the sides and above an opening.
Quitting Label:
Ornamental projection at each end of a label, a threshold, or the course of the threshold. It often takes the form of a gargoyle or other the carved decoration.
The window labeled:
Windows Taking fire rating labels of Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Glass rolling:
Similar to the construction of car windshields, this technique of sandwiches a piece of transparent plastic film or two sheets of glass. Normally used for safety reasons due to its resistance to breakage. They also reduce noise transmission into the interior.
Lancet window:
Tall, narrow window with pointed arch top, often with diamond shaped lights with lead, characteristic of Gothic architecture.
Shutters (also tablets):
Glass window with bars set diagonally.
Lead Light (also wear glasses, stained glass): Window with small panes of glass placed in grooved rods of cast lead or wine. Glass can be transparent, colored or color.
Elevator:
A handle or grip installed on the bottom rail of a band of double-hung window to assist in the raising or lowering the blade.
Light (also lite):
A window, a pane of glass within a window. Double-hung windows are designated by the number of lights in the upper and lower band as in 6-in-6.
Lintel:
Horizontal member (wood, steel or stone) in a window open to support the weight of the wall above. A header.
Window Loop (also Balistraria):
A long narrow vertical opening, usually growing inward, cut in a medieval wall, parapet, or fortification for use by archers. Changes appear in Roman architecture Revival ¬ esque.
Low-E glass:
A term used to refer to glass which has low-emissive ¬ tion due to a film or metallic coating on the glass surface. Usually constructed of double sealed panels coated glass filled with pure inert gas to block ultraviolet heat, cooling effects, while reflecting heat back into space in the room for late heating.
LVL:
Laminated veneer lumber - A combination of many pieces of wood veneer glued to provide greater structural capacity. Use often in window or door frames.
Masonry Opening:
The space in a factory on the left wall to open the window or door.
Meeting rail (also lock rail):
One of the two horizontal members of a double-hung sash that meet. A check rail.
Meeting style:
The vertical member in a couple of styles, as in the adjacent window frame.
Cast in stone (stone also jamb):
A stone that serves as a window jamb.
Mortise:
A slot or rectangular cavity cut into a piece of wood to receive another part.
Cash and spike:
A strong wood joint made by fitting a mortise in one board and a mapping project member (spike) in the other.
Mullion:
A vertical member (usually wood or metal) to structurally join two window or door units.
Muntin:
Vertical or horizontal bars used to separate glass in a sash into multiple lights. Often called a grid.
Nailing Fin:
A vinyl or aluminum extension attached to the structure of a window or door that creates a positive seal be ¬ between wall and window frame. It acts as an additional barrier against air and water leaks. Screws or nails are fixed through the fin to maintain unity in the opening.

North-light roof:
Sched north facing clerestory windows.
Sigma curve (also ogee molding):
Flex reverse curve is commonly found in window moldings and decorative details.
Operable window:
Window can be opened for ventilation.
Operator:
A metal arm and equipment connected to a window to the minimum ¬ for easy operation.
Palladian Window:
A large arch top window flanked by smaller windows on each side.
Panel:
This usually refers to glass panel or panels in a door frame.
Parting sliding:
A thin wood strip separating the sash weight in the weight box of each jamb of old windows double-hung.
Parting stop:
A vertical strip on each jamb that separates the blade of a double-hung window.
The image window:
Large fixed windows.
Pivot window units:
The window units in which the band hardware is near the midpoint of the fence or rail to permit sash rotation.
First leaf:
Balanced or moving belt of a window unit.
First window:
Glass window with single or multiple. A band of the storm can be installed.
Projection of the window:
Awning type window that swings outwards or inwards or at the top or bottom. The window can generally clean inside.
Complaint:
A square-shaped diamond or piece of glass set on the diagonal. A medieval term for small panes of glass set diagonally and Gothic windows.
Queen Anne window:
A small window with glass windows or lights arranged in various forms, usually only in the upper band. Appeared l870s.
Rail:
Horizontal member of a sheet of window or door panel.
Strip:
Molding of plastic or wood placed on a concrete or masonry for opening a furrow of uniform for a strip-type gasket to hold the glass of the window.
Reversible extension blind stop:
An extension stop rabbetted blind is to receive l / 2 or 25/32-in. coating.
Hole in the wall:
A framed opening in which the unit will be installed.
R-Value:
The measurement of resistance to heat transfer in a material. The higher the R value, the greater the insulation value.
Carpentry Metal:
Frame styles and bars establishing in a window or door.
Saddle Bar:
Mild steel bar placed horizontally across a window to a hardening of leaded glass.
Gordon Saddle:
Junquillo to secure two panels.
Sash lock:
A lock applied to the window to pull the band firmly against the frame (folding) or to pull the verification the rails together (double-hung) to seal the "time and safety.
Single-hung window:
Window similar to the double-hung window, except for the upper band is stationary.
Board Seat:
A flat board cut to fit the contour of a bow or bay window and installed between the threshold and the surface of the wall for a seat or a space for plants, etc.
Shading coefficient:
Decimal value that is profit solar window divided by the solar gain for a single Open Cup
window the same size. The shading coefficient of clear, double glazing is approximately 0.85 to 0.9.
Sidelight: A fixed often narrow glass window next to a door or window open.
Sill: Horizontal member the bottom of the window frame.
Simulated divided light: A method for the construction of windows or doors muntins in fixing inside and exterior of the insulating glass panel to simulate the appearance of true divided light. Modern Divided Light ® in the terminology of EAGLE.
Single glazing: the use of individual glass panes in a window frame or door panel. It is not as effective as double glazing.
The single-hung window: A window similar to the double-hung window, except for the upper band is stationary.
Slide-by windows that slide horizontally.
Smartwindow: A generic term that refers to windows with switchable coatings to control solar gain.
Robust framework: from window of one piece of wood.
Sound-insulating glass (also sound resistance of glass): double glazed fixed and separated on flexible substrates to reduce sound transmission.
Smashed window: The window unit at an angle into a wall.
Stacked windows: Combined group awnings, moldings, or Windows operating unit to form a large glass.
Style: vertical element of a sheet of window or door panel.
Style Lug or Horn: One of two extensions of belt styles support the upper band of a double-hung window.
Clip of the storm: Muntin device attached to a metal band to stop the panel moving outwards.
Stool: An interior finishes in a window that extends the sill and acts as a narrow platform. Often seen in the double-hung window.
Stop: A wood member nailed to a window frame seat to hold, position or separate window parts.
Tandem lock: A locking system that ensures the window at two points in closing of a lever.
Tempered glass: With special heat treatment, high security glass of the force that explodes in stone the size of the particles and not chips.
Tenon: A rectangular projection cut from a piece of wood for insertion into a mortise.
Thermal break: thermal insulation barrier between two thermally conductive materials.
Member of joint stern: Horizontal separation of a door of a window pane above the door, or separating one window to another.
Transom: A small window above a door or window to another.
Top Hung-in the window: A window awning hinged at the top and bottom back and forth.
Transom (also transom bar):
Horizontal member separating a door from a window panel above the door, or separating one window to another.
Triple glazing:
Three glass panels, with two air spaces between, com ¬ commonly consisting of an insulating glass with a separate storm sash. Also available in a window insulation in a single frame.
Triple window:
Generally refers to any tripartite group of windows with square heads. They are in the Colonial Revival houses. Units suggest Palladian windows, but are less expensive to build.
U-Value:
Measurement of heat transfer through a mate ¬ rial determined. The lower the U value, the better the insulation value.
Window in Venice:
Like the window Palladio.
Vertical sliding window:
One or more band moving in a vertical direction.
Strip Show:
Window image with the lights divided by muntins.
Ventilation Unit:
A window or door is opened for work or ventilation.
Wash cutting:
Bevel cutting a stone sill to divert water.
Drip water:
Molding is sometimes used on the outer surfaces of a band of oscillation in the window to keep the water driven by the sill.
Weatherstripping:
A strip of elastic material applied to the perimeter of the band and / or frame of a window or door to minimize the potential for air and water filtration.
Mourn court (court also drip):
Slot in the bottom of a horizontal board or masonry unit which projects beyond the wall of the service below to prevent water move towards the wall surface.

Yorkshire Electricity:
Window with one or more fixed blades and a horizontal band in motion.
Windload:
The force exerted on an area of moving air.
