Most Indian saris are five to six meters long. Saris are woven with a flat end (the end of which lies within the envelope), two long decorative borders throughout the SAR, and a section of two and fifty-nine meters at the other end which continues and extends the length wise decoration. This end is called Falu, is the part thrown over the shoulder in the Nivi style of draping. It is one of the most visible of the SAR and woven and decorated "to show".

More expensive saris had elaborate geometric motifs, floral, or figurative created on the loom, as part of the fabric. Sometimes threads warp and weft fabric dyeing and creating beautiful wedding baluchari models. Sometimes threads of different colors are built into the base fabric in patterns - an ornamented border, Falu developed one, and often, small repeated accents in the same fabric in various qualities of silk, cotton, georgette, chiffon, etc. These accents are called buttis or bhutties (there are several). For luxury saris, these patterns could be woven with threads of gold or silver, called Zari work. Modern Zari work is usually executed with bright synthetic fibers, rather than real gold or silver thread (made by adjustment of gold or silver thread around a base).

Sometimes the saris were more decorated, after weaving, with various types of embroidery works. Resham, Zari and zardousi embroidery work is done with colored silk, gold, copper or silver thread or wedding saris beautiful dulhan wedding or saris. Embroidery Zardozi uses gold and silver thread, pearls and sometimes not gemstones. Cheap modern versions of zardozi use synthetic metallic thread and imitation stones, such as fake pearls, beads and sequins Swarovski crystals.
The word 'sari' is believed to derive from the Sanskrit word "sati", which means strip of cloth. This became the Prakrit Sadi 'and the sound later decayed into' sari '.

Some versions of the history of Indian clothing trace the sari back to the Indus Valley civilization, which flourished in 2800-1800 BC. One ancient statue shows a man covered with a robe which some sari researchers believe was a precursor of the SAR.

Ancient Tamil poetry, such as by Silappadhikaram and Kadambari Banabhatta, describes women in exquisite drapery. This curtain is believed to be a sari. In the Natya Shastra (an ancient Indian treatise describing ancient dance and costumes), the navel of Being Supreme would be the source of life and creativity. Hence the stomach of the dancer is going to expose that some take to indicate the use of a sari.

Odissi dancer wore a dress of dhoti wrap. Some isinglass historians believe the men, which is the oldest of the garment wrapped India, is the precursor of the SAR. They say that until the 14th century, the dhoti was worn by men and women.

Sculptures from the Gandhara, Mathura and Gupta schools (1 to 6 century CE) show goddesses and dancers wearing what appears to be a dhoti wrap, isinglass in the "story" that covers the legs slightly and then flows into a curtain of long, decorative front legs [1]. No bodices are shown.

Other sources say that everyday costume consisted of a dhoti or Lungi (sarong), combined with a chest strap and a veil or wrap that could be used to cover the upper body or head. Some argue that the two parts of Kerala mundum neryathum (mundu in Malayalam is the same that dhoti or sarong and neryath means a cloth to cover the upper body like a shawl) is a survival of the ancient styles of Indian clothing and that the piece sari is a modern innovation, created by combining the two pieces of the mundum neryathum.

It is generally accepted that wrapped sari-like dresses, shawls and veils have been used by indigenous women for a long time and that have been used in its current form for hundreds of years.

It is possible that researchers arguing for a recent origin for the Choli and the petticoat are extrapolating from southern India, where it is documented fact that in some areas, women only had the sari and exposed the upper body. The references to poetry as Shilappadikaram indicate that during the Sangam period in ancient South India, a single piece of clothing served as both lower garment and head covering, leaving the breast and belly fully exposed. In Kerala there are many references to women who are topless, including many pitcures by Raja Ravi Varma. Even today, women in some rural areas do not use Cholis.
