Indian sari, sari - a brief history of Anshu Design Studio

A sari or saree or sari is a female garment in the Indian subcontinent. The sari is a strip of unstitched cloth, ranging from 5.30 to nine meters long which is mounted on the body in various styles. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then covered over his shoulder exposing the stomach.

The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (pavada / pavadai in the south and in eastern Shaya India), with a blouse called Choli or Ravika that form the upper garment. The choli has short sleeves and a low neck and is usually cropped, and as such, is particularly suitable for wear in the sultry summer in southern Asia. Cholis may be "backless" or of a halter neck style or regular (visit www.anshusdesigns.com different patterns). These tend to be smarter with a lot of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery and can be used on special occasions. Women in the armed forces when wearing a sari uniform, wearing a half-sleeve shirt tucked in his waist. The sari was born in South India and North and is now a symbol for all of India.

Origins and History

'Sari' The word evolved from 'sattika Prakrit word as mentioned in the early Jain and Buddhist literature.

The history of clothing the Indian sari trace back to the Indus Valley civilization, which flourished during the 2800-1800 a. C. around the western part the subcontinent. The first known representation of the sari in the Indian subcontinent is the statue of a priest wearing a curtain Indus Valley.

Antigua Tamil poetry, such as Silappadhikaram and Kadambari by Banabhatta, describes women in exquisite cloth or sari. In the ancient tradition India and the Natya Shastra (an ancient Indian treatise describing ancient dance and costumes), the navel of the Supreme Being is considered to be the source of life and creativity, thus the stomach is to be left uncovered by the sari.

Some historians believe that men dhoti suit, which is the oldest Indian garment wrapped, is the precursor of the sari. They say that until the 14 th century, the dhoti was worn by men and women.

Sculptures from the Gandhara, Mathura and Gupta schools (first to sixth century AD) show goddesses and dancers wearing what appears to be a dhoti wrap, in the "fishtail" version which covers the legs slightly and then flows into a long curtain, decorative in front of the legs. No bodices are shown.

other sources say that everyday costume consisted of a dhoti and Lungi (sarong), combined with chest band and a veil or wrap that could be used to cover the upper body or head. The two pieces neryathum Kerala mundum (mundu, a dhoti or sarong, neryath, a shawl, in Malayalam) is a survival of ancient Indian clothing styles, the one-piece sari is a modern innovation, created by the combination of the two parts neryathum mundum.

It is generally accepted that finished garments like sari, shawls and veils were worn by Indian women for a long time, and have been used as current for hundreds of years.

A point of particular controversy is the history of the choli, or sari blouse, and petticoat. Some researchers claim that they do not were known before the British arrived in India, which were introduced to satisfy Victorian ideas of modesty. Previously, only women wore a cloth covered and casually exposed the upper body and breasts. Other historians point to much textual and artistic evidence for various forms of the chest strap and wrap top the body.

In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, is documented fact that women in many communities only wore the sari and exposed the upper body until the 20th century. Poetic references from works like Shilappadikaram indicate that during the period in ancient Sangam Tamil Nadu, one piece of clothing served as a lower garment and cover head, leaving the chest and abdomen completely open. In Kerala there are many references to women with bare chest. Even today, women in some rural areas do not wear cholis.

Types of coverage (http://www.anshusdesigns.com/differentways.html)

The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with the loose end of the curtain on the shoulder, baring the stomach. However, the sari can be wrapped in several different styles, although some styles require a sari of a length or shape. The French cultural anthropologist and sari researcher, Chantal Boulanger, categorizes sari drapes in the following families.

  • Nivi - styles originally worn in Andhra Pradesh, besides the modern Nivi, there is also Nivi Kaccha where folds pass through the legs and slipped into the waist in the back. This allows free movement while covering the legs.
  • Bengali and style Oriya.
  • Gujarati - this style differs from Nivi only in the way that the loose end is handled: in this style, the loose end is mounted on the right shoulder instead of the left, and also wrapped back to front instead of backward.
  • Maharashtrian / kashta, which drape (front and back) is very similar to that of the male Maharashtrian dhoti. The center of the sari (along pocket) is placed in the center of the back end stepped forward and tied securely, and then the two ends are wrapped around the legs. When used as a sari, an extra-long cloth is used and the ends are passed over the shoulders and upper body. They are primarily worn by Brahmin women of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • Dravidian - sari curtains used in Tamil Nadu; function many pinkosu, or pleated rosette, at the waist.
  • Madisa style - This shade is typical of Brahmin ladies from Tamil Nadu and Kerala
  • Kodagu style - This shade is limited to women from the Kodagu region of Karnataka. In this style, the pleats are created in the rear, instead of the front. The loose end of the saree is covered forward again on the right shoulder, and fixed in the rest of the sari.
  • Gondar - sari styles found in many parts of central India. The fabric is the first cover on the left shoulder, then arranged to cover the body.
  • The two pieces neryathum sari or mundum, used in Kerala. In general, unbleached cotton and decorated with gold stripes or color and / or borders.
  • Tribal styles - often secured by links with firmness in the chest, covering the breasts.

Nivi style is today's most popular sari style.

The curtain Nivi begins with an end of the sari tucked into the waistband of her skirt. The fabric is wrapped around the lower body once, then hand-gathered into folds to just below the navel. The pleats are also tucked into the waistband of her skirt. They create an elegant and decorative effect which poets have likened to the petals of a flower.

After one lap around the waist, the loose end is mounted on the shoulder. The loose end is called the pallu or pallav. It is wrapped diagonally across the torso. Used in the right hip on the left shoulder, partly baring midriff. The navel can be revealed or hidden by the user by setting the barge, depending social settings where develops the sari worn. The long end of the pallu hanging from the back of the shoulder is often closely decorated. The well can pallav left hanging freely, tucked in the waist, used to cover the head, or simply to cover the neck, by draping it on the right shoulder as well. Some styles Nivi used with the pallu covers back to the front.

Nivi sari was popularized through the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. By modifying the Indian sari neriyathum south mundum call. In one of his paintings in the Indian subcontinent was shown as a mother wearing a flowing Nivi sari.

In Bangladesh

The sari is worn by women throughout Bangladesh. There are many regional variations Saris, both in silk and cotton. However, Tanta Jamdani / Taant cotton Benarosi Dhakai, Rajshahi silk, Tangail Tanter Sari-Sari and Katan as the most popular actresses Aishwarya Rai and Bangladesh.Popular Madhuri Dixit wore the Sari Benaroshi Dhakaiya in the song "Dola re Dola "from the movie" Devdas ".

In Pakistan

In Pakistan, the use of saris is less common than the shalwar kameez more traditionally used throughout the country. The sari nevertheless maintains a popular dress for formal functions like weddings. The sari is sometimes used as daily use, especially in Karachi, elderly women who were accustomed to wearing it in pre-partition India and some of the new generations that have revived interest in saris. The reason why the sari lost popularity in Pakistan was because it is seen as a Hindu dress. Although it was seen wearing them, Fatima Jinnah, the "Mother of the Nation ", called the sari" unpatriotic "and the wife of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, declared that never wears the garment.

In Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka women have saris in many styles. However, two ways of draping the sari are popular and tend to dominate the Indian style (Nivi Classic curtain) and the Kandyan style (or "ossuary in Sinhala). The Kandyan style is generally more popular in the region of the hills of Kandy from which the style of his name. Though local preferences play a role, most women decide on style depending on personal preference or what is perceived as more flattering to your figure.

The traditional Kandyan (ossuaries) style consists of a full blouse which covers the entire torso, and is partially hidden in the front as seen in this portrait of the 19th century. However, modern mix of styles has led to most users, exposing the abdomen. The tail end of the sari is perfectly folded rather than free flowing. This is quite similar to the pleated rosette used in the style of the 'Dravidian' noted in the article.

Kandy style is considered the national costume of women Sinhalese. Is the uniform of the cabin crew airline of Sri Lanka.

In Nepal

In Nepal, a special style of draping is used in a saree called Haku patasi. The sari is wrapped around the waist and carried a shawl covering the upper half of saree which is used instead of "Fallujah."

The sari as cloth

Saris are woven with a flat end (the end that is concealed inside the wrap), two long decorative borders running along the sari, and a section of one to three feet at the other end which continues and deepens the decoration along the length. This point Falu is called, is the part thrown over the shoulder in the Nivi style of draping.

In past times, saris were ribbons of silk or cotton. The rich could afford finely-woven, diaphanous silk saris that, according to folklore, could be passed through a finger ring. The poor wore coarse woven cotton saris. All saris were handwoven and represented a considerable investment of time or money.

simple hand-woven villagers' saris are often decorated with checks or striped woven into the fabric. Cheap saris were also decorated with block print carved wooden blocks and vegetable dyes, or tie dyeing, known in India as bhandani work.

More expensive saris had elaborate geometric motifs, floral and figurative or brocades created on the loom, as part of fabric. At times, and the plot threads of the warp is dyed and then woven, creating ikat patterns. Sometimes threads of different colors were woven in the base fabric in patterns, a decorated border, an elaborate pallu, and often the small details to be repeated in the same fabric. These accents are called buttis or bhutties (spellings vary). For luxury saris, these patterns can be woven with gold or silver thread, called Zari work.

Sometimes the saris were further decorated, after weaving, with various types of embroidery. Resham work is embroidery done with colored silk thread. zardozi embroidery using gold and silver thread and sometimes pearls and precious stones. Cheap modern versions of zardozi use synthetic metallic thread imitation stones, such as fake pearls and crystals Swarovski.

In modern times, saris are increasingly woven on mechanical looms and artificial fibers such as polyester, nylon, or rayon require no starch or iron. They are printed by machine, or woven in simple patterns made with floats in the back of the sari. This can create look more details on the front, while looking ugly on the back. Punchra work is imitated with inexpensive machine-made tassel cut.

Tissue hand, hand-decorated saris are naturally much more expensive than the machine imitations. While the largest of all the hand-woven market has plummeted (leading a lot of anguish among the Indians Handweavers), hand-woven saris are still popular for weddings and other large social events. A prominent weaver designs brocaded Paithani and other types of saris is Meera Mehta.
