What drives African World War?

The Democratic Republic of Congo border has been described as the heart of Africa. Geographically surrounded by nine other African nations. Democratic Republic of Congo should be a rich nation. It is the sixth most mineral-rich country in the world. The landscape has fifty percent of African forests and river system that could provide hydroelectric power throughout the continent. Instead, it is a place where more than a decade the world has raged deadliest conflict killed an estimated five million and a half people and citizens who survive are now among world's poorest.

What drives this war that has involved seven foreign armies and is known as the "African World War"?

The ground is saturated in gold, diamonds and other natural resources. In fact, the Democratic Republic of Congo has seventy percent of the worlds coltan and more than thirty percent of the worlds reserves of diamonds. Is the smuggling of coltan and cassiterite, tantalum minerals and tin respectively, which is the key to the conflict between all armed groups in eastern Congo. These and other minerals found there are of vital importance in the manufacture of electronic parts, chips computers and mobile phones.

These minerals are millionaires. In 2000, the coltan ore is typically sold on world markets by about $ 330.00 USD per kilogram. The recent technology boom and low availability of coltan has caused a substantial increase in the price to almost U.S. $ 400 per kilogram at a time like the supply problems in complying with the demands of such companies as Nokia and Sony.

There are mines all over the eastern Congo, some little more than holes in the ground so deep fifty meters. Hundreds of people come here hoping to capitalize on the fever seize minerals. Few make more than a handful of women dollars.The minerals take the river to wash. The miners do not do much.

Although charities are intended to help former child soldiers and prostitutes, poverty is driving many young people in the military. They have no way to survive, no family, no place to live, nowhere to sleep and must prostitution to survive. Most child soldiers are boys. There are still 33 000 children, including girls who participate in the armed forces in this region. The thin line between perpetrator and victim are blurred when the stories come to the forefront of what children are forced to do so by the militias and what to do to survive.

Congo exposures beautiful scenery, but within there is suffering and pain. There is a furious battle for control of earth minerals used in the manufacture of electronic components in computers and mobile mobile. We, as modern society buy this technology, but at the root of the shedding of blood and pain that other people on this planet has to experience so we can have your laptop or computer. Does anyone of us choose to question where it is coming. This is the real cost of technology.
